Diaries are characterized by an I, writing about the act of writing. Romanticism is characterized by a subjective turn. A romantic diary can be defined as a diary focussing on the writer's subjective development through writing. But is it possible for a female voice in patriarchal society to be represented as subjectively female? With the diary of Camilla Collett from the 1830s as an example, this problem is discussed from the point of view of Fichtes philosophy as well as modern feminist theory.
