A protocell is defined as the earliest form of chemical system that can replicate itself. Although cells inevitably contain some form of metabolism to achieve this goal, the cell was originally thought of and thus named by its enclosing structure. We now know that the structure is built by a cellular metabolism which is regulated and produced by an information polymer. The interaction of these three parts is just as important for a protocell as for the cells present today. Our working premise is that when these three parts are inter-related in a chemical system it will be possible to create a cell-like mimic.
