In this article, that is based on my contribution to the workshop Multilingual phraseology and translation, I’ll focus on the aspects and the role of language competence in the translation of phrasemes, i.a. the phraseological competence. At first, I’ll describe the context of language competence in translation. Secondly, I’ll define and illustrate some aspects of the phraseological competence that are relevant in the act of translating, and finally, I’ll discuss the difference between phraseology in system and the conception of the translation as a text in relation to the praseological competence as an integral part in the act of translating phrasemes.
