Contrary to the accepted opinion, only a few hundred, perhaps a thousand Cypriots left their island to serve in a cohors Cypria. A "Cyprian" cohort, which as time went by came to consist mainly of non-Cypriots, saw active service on the Danube during the Dacian wars; later, it was assigned to garrison duty in the Crimea.
