The paper discusses the possibility of perceiving a poststructuralist approach to learning as being emancipatory. ‘Identity’ is the main concept of the paper, and theoretically the paper draws on Michel Foucault and Bronwyn Davies. With an outset in Foucault´s comments on some of Immanuel Kant´s ideas, a poststructuralist approach – positioning theory – is suggested as offering emancipatory aspects. An empirical example from the field of care worker education is presented. Next, in relation to the example the suggested emancipatory possibilities are discussed and the approach is briefly compared to other studies.
