Training the Trainers - from an EU Perspective Quality in legal interpreting is not just the responsibility of the interpreters but a responsibility that is shared by many parties, including the training providers. To help interpreters professionalize, good training programmes run by competent trainers have to be made available to them. The aim of this paper is to present the EU project, AGIS II, Making things happen: Training the trainers of legal interpreters and translators throughout the EU, coordinated by Kirsten W. RAsmussen and Bodil Martinsen, associate professors at the Department of Language and Business Communication at the Aarhus School of Business.The other project participants are from Belgium, Great Britain, Italy, the Netherlands and Spain. The project, whose overall objective is to create the means to obtain competent trainers, is a follow-up to three previous projects (Grotius ! + II and AGIS I) on logal interpreting and translation, that, in short, aimed at defining recommendations for the establishment of equivalencies of standards, disseminating such recommendations, and further disseminating and policy making, respectively. The object of the AGIS II is to initiate the implementation process of the recommendations put forward by developing concrete guidelines and materials for training and assessment of not only legal interpreters and translators but also of those working with interpreters and translators within the legal services and sharing the responsibility for the quality of legal interpreting. This process includes, among other things, the development of exemplary curricula, course designs, sample lesson plans and teaching materials, which will be presented and discussed/evaluated at a concluding Seminar on training the trainers, which is to be held in Aarhus, Denmark, and transmitted via the Internet (live-streaming) in order to give access to as large an audience as possible. The material produced during the project and resulting from the seminar will be made available on the project website. The project thereby produces easily accessible results and thus facilitates the establishment of recognised and EU-consistent training and assessment of, among others, legal interpreters and translators based on equivalent standards. This paper presents a project which forms a solid platform for future action to enhance the quality of the services rendered by legal interpreters and translators. In addition, the project also forms a valuable adjunct to other efforts aimed at providing up-to-date quality training.
