The case of the COP conferences
Framing climate change in a popularised setting: The case of the COP conferences The major project from which this presentation has emerged intends to analyze the media communication in connection with mainly the COP15 conference in Copenhagen on climate change 2009 in a number of European countries (printed newspapers and online versions) from a micro, meso and macro level. The main idea is to investigate how newspapers present the issue, what changes are visible in the different comparisons, and to what extent these changes may be related to efforts by the local and global organizers of the conference. In our part of the project, we look at how knowledge is created via the choice of metaphors. On the basis of an analysis of the framing of the COP15 conference and its goals as presented in the introductory statements by the two Danish presidents of the conference we have found a range of salient metaphors used about the event in the Danish press coverage reaching from seeing climate change negotiations as a road to mutual salvation, at one end of the scale, to seeing such negotiations as a kind of war between nations and interests. In our paper, we will present the background of the range of metaphors used and investigate the development in the use of these metaphors from the first to the last day of the conference in Danish newspapers. We will end the presentation by comparing our results with the metaphors we find in Spanish newspapers on the first and the last day of the conference and with the introductory statement by the president of the Cancún conference in 2010 in order to assess possible influences in the framing from the national and the political setting.
