Against the background of a recent resurgence of the term "crusade" in public debate, president George Bush's and pope Benedict XVI's use of the term includede, Else Marie Wiberg Pedersen describes the Second Crusade (1146-1149) and the role of the Cistercian abbot and prominent "church politician" Bernard of Clairvaux. She paints a comprehensive picture of the relationship between religion and politics in Europe in one of its important formative periods, a picture which outlines a future understanding of religion and politics.
