It is apparent that some confusion exits both among researchers and political actors about the various forms of direct democracy. Various institutions such as IRI and IDEA, various countries such as Switzerland and California, and various authors such as Pier Vincenzo Uleri and David Altman present their own typologies and terminologies. The aim of this paper is to review the similarities and differences of these presentations and discuss and, if possible, to suggest an overall classification that relates the most important typologies and terminologies to each other.
