In the article, we analyse the Danish private sectors strengths and weaknesses in Research and Development vis-à-vis Finland, Sweden and Norway. The aim of the analyses is to identify whether there are sectors or specific firm clusters that have invested less in R&D than comparable countries using actual R&D investments in 2001. The main results are that the Danish private sector R&D activities are smaller than the Finnish and particularly Swedish R&D activities but larger than the Norwegian activities. The Finnish advantages disappear when the Finnish ICT sector is removed. The Danish weaknesses lie in the ICT production and trade sector as well as among large firms while the Danish strengths lie in the medico and knowledge sectors as well as among SME firms.
