Within the humanities a fairly new reorientation towards imagery is taking place. The article describes the components involved in this ‘Iconic Turn' by introducing to leading german scholars and practitioners (Hans Belting, Horst Bredekamp, Gottfried Boehm) and offers a presentation and illustration of the most important topics of discussion. Rather than seeing images as mere representations, the article argues in favour of regarding imagery as prescriptive presentations.
