In the article I discuss three typified teacher roles: the teacher as a knowledge transmitter, a therapist, and the teacher as a midwife. As will appear from the article, the role of the classroom teacher cannot be discussed without emphasizing the qualifications implied in the role and the knowledge that is supposed to be disseminated by the role. In other words, the teacher role and teacher qualifications are in the last resort a question of the academic content of the curriculum. In the article I will advocate for the teacher as a midwife being the basic teacher role.
