Transcultural Images of Sugar and Modernity in the Poetry of Nicolás GuillénTranskulturelle billeder af sukker og modernitet i Nicolás Guilléns poesi
This article investigates the ambiguous image of sugar in the poetry of Nicolás Guillén. It claims that the ambiguity of the sugar-images reflects an ambiguous relation to the past of Cuba and its long history of slavery. Based on the idea of transculturation, as it is conceptualized by Fernando Ortiz, it discusses how sugar is related to this history and the idea of modernity.
