Online newspapers may be easy to identify, but are difficult to define. This paper discusses how to define the online newspaper and proposes a definition that includes online newspapers with or without printed editions. The definition is based on the functions of a newspaper rather than on who the publisher is, and may be seen as extending the concept of the printed newspaper. A planned typology of online newspapers in Denmark will draw on this definition, and this paper explains the methodology that will be used. The two-tiered definition has on the first level a general wording that includes a large group of publications, and on the second level, several optional elements are formulated, creating a framework for a detailed typology of online newspapers.
