Meaningfulness of outcomes as an enabler of innovative work behaviors
The objective of this research is to examine the relationship between employee engagement and innovative work behaviours (IWBs), focusing primarily on how facets of employee engagement encourage employees to generate and implement ideas for new products, services, and processes. Findings from the qualitative single case study in a professional service firm (PSF) in Denmark suggest that employees were more likely to become engaged in IWBs when the outcomes were perceived as meaningful, and they were more likely to remain committed to projects to ensure their final realization when they were perceived as meaningful. The paper contributes to theory by linking employee engagement and innovation, and by expanding on current models of employee engagement by introducing a feedback loop driven by perceived meaningfulness.
