The Role of Visual Representation in Design Anthropology
The paper explores the role of video and (visual) anthropology in design and product development processes from creating insights about users to developing design ideas in interdisciplinary teams. In the paper we suggest montage as a metaphor for understanding how meaning and ideas are created in design processes. Rather than viewing montage as a particular style of filmmaking, we see the design process itself as a montage, a process where different heterogeneous materials – sketches, video, prototypes, etc. – as well as different professional and disciplinary perspectives are brought together, juxtaposed and combined like a montage ‘in-the-making’.
