The refractive index of germano-silica glasses changes during exposure to ultraviolet light. Illuminating an optical fiber with a UV laser, it is possible to induce a periodic change in the effective refractive index of the fiber (Bragg grating). Two main contributions of the Ph.D. project: · Development of a novel polarization control method for UV writing of advanced Bragg gratings with arbitrary refractive index modulation profile including multiple pi-phase shifts. · Development of a novel efficient technique for Bragg grating design which allows calculating an index modulation profile that should be inscribed in an optical fiber in order to achieve a desired spectrum.
