The purpose of Task 2.2 of the HARDER project is according to the work package description: For various structural configurations of the struck ship and using the results of Task 2.1, the probability distributions for the damage location and size will be derived. The format will be similar to the p-, r-, and v-factors used in IMO Resolution MSC 19(58), concerning damage stability assessment of dry cargo ships. The results will be implemented in an existing software package for probabilistic damage stability calculation. The results for the numerical simulations will be compared to the damage statistics collected in WP1 and significant differences will be identified and accounted for in the final results. Firstly, comprehensive Monte Carlo simulations have been carried out in order to determine probability distributions for damage sizes at 15 different vessels. Input parameters for the simulation and methods of calculation have been discussed. The damage distributions for the different vessels have been compared and analyses regarding relations between damage parameters and main particulars have been performed. The damage statistics collected in work package 1 have been analysed for relations between the damage location, the damage sizes and the main particulars of the struck vessel. From the numerical simulation and the analyse of the damage statistics it is found that the current formulation from the IMO SLF 43/3/2 can be used as basis for determination of the p-, r-, and v-factors. Expressions for the distribution of the non-dimensional damage location, the non-dimensional damage length and the non-dimensional penetrations have been derived. These distributions have been used as basis for a proposal for the p- and r-factors. Two proposals for the v-factor have been performed using the damage statistics and bow height statistics for vessels in the world fleet. The proposals for the p-, r-, and v-factors have been compared to factors from current regulation by examples.
